Wayne's 1949 Whizzer Motorbike
My mother heard an advertisement on the radio for this bike and took me out by Freeland to buy it. I don't know what they paid for the bike, but I loved it. This must have been the original "MoPed" as it had a motor and pedals. On the handlebar was a lever. If you held up the lever it was hold open the exhaust valve and you were supposed to pedal the bike to a substantial speed, lower the lever to activate the exhaust valve and the engine would start. This method actually worked, but pedaling the bike was very difficult for a 14 year old. I found that it was muck easier to hold the valve open, run along side the bike pushing it with the handlebars, jump on and release the lever. This worked fine if the belt was good. I used up several sticks of belt gripper. I was not allowed to drive in on the street until I had a Michigan driver's license. I was quite the hit at school at age 14 with an actual driver's license.
